The International Festival of Sacral Music in Warsaw is considered today to be one of the capital city's premiere festivals and one of the most significant events of its kind in the world. It's held annually in June.
It was created in 1991 on the initiative of organist Przemyslaw Kapitula, who viewed the event as a celebration of the 4th Pilgrimage of Pope John Paul II to his homeland.
The festival fundamentally aims to present the musical works of Christianity and other religions in an attractive form. Festival concerts are held at a number of Warsaw's historical churches, foremost among them being St. John's Cathedral, which has become an important international center of sacral and organ music.
The festival has attracted many exceptional ensembles from around the world and the festival audiences have numbered in the tens of thousands and the number of compositions performed in Warsaw's churches has been equally impressive.
Concerts feature works of all musical eras, solo pieces, chamber music, and above all masterpieces requiring vast arrays of performers (soloists, choirs, orchestras).
